Telling stories large and small to make sense of the world we live in.

My work as a journo

The last few years have been unbearably boring in the news cycle. I wish that were the truth. Instead, I wrote articles on a dizzying range of crises, including the COVID-19 pandemic, racial justice protests, 2020 presidential election, 2021 Boston Mayoral Race, Israel-Palestine conflict, U.S. withdrawal from Kabul, war in Ukraine, and more. I also had the journalistic relief of covering lighter subjects, like the best bookstores in Boston, food and shopping in Charlestown + Central Square + Allston, Boston’s best holiday markets, Spain’s four-day workweek experiment, a Wikipedia page for a now removed statue of Abraham Lincoln in Boston, and how Ernest Hemingway artfully escaped death more times than you’d think. Exciting, nerve-wracking, and fulfilling are words I’d use to describe being a foot soldier in the Fourth Estate.

My most meaningful journalistic experience remains my four years with the Boston Political Review (BPR), Boston University’s nonpartisan political publication since 2014.

I began my tenure as co-Editor-in-Chief of the BPR in 2020. Together with the five remaining members from my freshman year, we built the BPR family to over 80 active members. We also hit 3,000 subscribers and over 11,000 readers achieving 300% or more year-over-year growth each year. Our nonpartisan coverage gained attention all over campus and by news outlets in the city, including the Boston Globe. Our collaboration with Roar News of King’s College London and Juncture Review of the University of Manchester opened up intercultural connections with global readership from our friends across the pond. We even made it on the press lists of Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) and Fox News. People were paying attention to a group of students with good intentions and ambition.

Writing a few articles is one thing. Editing and publishing a few hundred is another. Experience in the managerial aspect of journalism has made me a better self-editor and writer as I think more critically about my own writing. I covered dozens of different beats, but none as consequential as contributing to stories that had a tangible impact on my student community and beyond.

Cool Story

Some friends have told me I have a good voice for podcasts (not to be confused with a face for radio). In May 2021, I joined Roar News Editor-in-Chief Marino Unger-Verna and Strand Magazine Editor-in-Chief Ketki Mahabaleshwarkar on RoarCast to chat about leading student publications during such a challenging period. It turns out that student journalists have a lot more power and responsibility than we think and helped me overcome my fear of public speaking. Check it out here.
